The Gravity Project, Friday 1 June, 7pm, The Jazzlab, Melbourne International Jazz Festival 2018
It’s a little early, perhaps, but I’m already declaring one concert on the opening night to be a festival highlight. It was The Gravity Project in which Paul Grabowsky on piano and Rob Burke on saxophone joined shakuhachi master Masaki Nakamura, koto virtuoso Kuniko Obina and Tokyo-based Aaron Choulai on laptop and electronics in a world premiere cross-cultural exchange with Tokyo Jazz Festival. The ensemble also featured Niran Dasika on trumpet, Marty Holoubek on bass and James McLean on drums.
I did not manage to take a single photograph of James McLean, hidden away at the back as he was, but here is a gallery of some images from that concert. A review of the festival will be posted later.
